A popular procedure on UK layouts is to run to a timetable (usually sequential but not to clock) and the current service is shown on a flip chart as shown here. The same information is printed on the sheets visible to the public and the operator. I'm not sure how interesting this really is to most of the public, but it can answer questions about types of loco, etc, for those interested.
