AHTS Hull Build

Running gear 1

Running gear 1

26 Aug 2012. I spent several hours on marking out for installation of the running gear (props, shafts, rudders, etc). Although I had been assured that the instruction diagrams are correct they don't quite agree with the molded guides on the hull which is obviously a bit disconcerting.

I went back and forth a bit, as you can tell, partly because one is measuring on surfaces that aren't flat in any direction, but also because I initially took the bottom of the stern recess V as central - it isn't! Having sussed that and established a better centreline I eventually settled on putting the shafts and rudders on 130mm centres - the green marks are my 'final' positions.

Another little worry was that the distance from A-frames to shaft hull entry is given as 144mm, but on the hull the molded marks were a good bit closer together. Scaling from the drawings suggested the A-frames were in the right place (front of frame 100mm from stern of boat), so I decided to take the A-frames as correct and moved the propshaft holes forward a bit from their mold marks. You can just see this on the top shaft position in the picture. This had ramifications that I'll come to later.
